Nitric Acid

Ammonia, of which Yara is the world's leading player, is the basis for the manufacture of nitric acid. Nitric acid (HNO₃) is obtained by oxidizing ammonia on platinum cloths, producing nitrous gases such as NO₂, which are then absorbed into water. This produces weak nitric acid (WNA). Nitric acid is a clear, yellow liquid, which has a fairly strong odor.

Yara nitric acid can be transported directly to your industrial site  using several transport means depending on location and customer means. We comply with strict regulations throughout the supply chain that ensure the quality of nitric acid.

Nitric acid, the importance of quality

Our ammonia manufacturing plants are certified ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, thus guaranteeing the manufacture of quality products in compliance with environmental standards. Our control of the entire supply chain allows you to access these quality products.
Once at your site, it is essential for you to follow the safety instructions for the handling and use of nitric acid.

Industrial Applications of Nitric Acid

Nitric acid is used in many industrial applications for its "oxidizing" or "acidic" qualities.
Common uses include:

  • Production of nitrogen products intended primarily for fertilization
  • Adipic acid-intermediate of Nylon 6.6 chemistry. such as artificial fibers, nylon yarns and plastic parts for automobiles
  • Polyurethanes (MDI and TDI): insulation, foams, paints and coatings
  • Nitrocellulose: varnishes and paints, inks, civil explosives
  • Specialty Chemistry: Numerous Nitration Reactions
  • Cleaning products: detaring agent in the food industry. To learn more about all of our products and services for the food industry, visit our Agri-Food webpage
  • Element extraction/separation processes
  • Surface treatment in metallurgy

On request, we will send you the specification sheet for these products

Nitric Acid Market Trends

As a major producer and trader of Nitric Acid, Yara interacts in contact with many markets. As part of our reliable, stable and "strategic" partnership with our customers, we share our considerations in terms of the evolution of nitric acid prices in view of the news, the price of raw materials and the economic situation.

Nitric Acid

Nitric acid is a liquid and colorless chemical compound with great corrosive properties. It must be transported by secure stainless steel structures and can be delivered in:

  • Roadtankers
  • ISO containers
  • Railcars

Our role is to fulfil customer demand for bulk deliveries by wagons or full tankers only. Of course, our products are available in specific packaging from our distributors.
